We Did It!

The Archibald Library reopened to the public on September 13th, 2008. We had a nice rededication ceremony, led by the Mayor of Rancho Cucamonga, Dr. Donald Kurth, and then opened the building to our loyal customers.

Please stop by the "new" Archibald Library and check out our new look!

Mark Your Calendars!

OK, we now have a date for the grand reopening of the Archibald Library. It will be Saturday, September 13th. Activities will start at 9:30am and we will have an open house from 10am - 5pm. There will be special programs for kids and you will be among the first to see the new, "reinvented" Archibald Library!

Construction work is starting to wind down now, with the finishing touches getting applied. For the next ten days or so, book shelves will be getting reinstalled, and after this, the books will finally go back on to the shelves (so you can once again check them out!)

There are a few new photos on the right. This will probably be the last photo update. After this, if you want to see the "new" Archibald Library, come on down starting September 13th!

Serious Construction is Going On!

Work is really going at a frantic pace at the Archibald Library now. In the past two days, carpet and all of the service desks and new cabinets are appearing. If you look at the recent photos, you will also start to get a good idea of the new color scheme. It really is different (and looks great! This photo is of the carpeting in the young adult area).

By the end of the week, wall coverings should be going up, and all of the ceiling tiles should be in. And perhaps most important, testing of the new air conditioning system should being!

Check back here for more updates. Really, every day it seems like something new is happening now!

Work is Progressing!

We are now four weeks into the construction phrase of the remodel and work is progressing at a steady rate. We now have a new roof, which will be followed by a new, more energy-efficient air conditioning system. There has also been a lot of dry wall activity (the new technology center is coming together very nicely!)

Painting has also begun both on the interior and exterior. And next week, the monument sign (aka "the tombstone") outside will be coming down! (I will definitely get pictures of this).

There are only about five more weeks of construction on the schedule before it will be time to bring all of the books back inside and on the shelves where they belong.

Stay tuned for more updates as they happen!

Demolition Has Definitely Begun

Well, it we weren't sure about remodelling the Archibald Library, there is no turning back now. In just three days, the construction crew has (among other things) removed all of the old service desks, carpet, ceiling tiles, OPAC areas, the Children's Services Supervisor's office and more! No wonder there is a fine haze of drywall in the building now...

Take a look at the photos (which are linked to on the right). The Archibald Library will never be the same again!

Finally, for a little preview of what is to come, on the right is an artist's rendering of what the elevator doors will look like after the remodel. If you look closely (and know more than a few languages!), you will see that the elevator door says "Read" in twenty of the world's most widely-spoken languages. Very appropriate for a library wouldn't you say?...

The Summer Library is Open for Business!

On Monday the 23rd, our summer "Family Place" library opened for business. It is just down the street from the Archibald Library (which is currently undergoing an extreme makeover but will be back better than ever in the Fall!)

Check out our summer library! (For photos, check out the link on the right).

Work Has Begun!

In the past week, staff have moved over 75,000 books, CDs, DVDs, and all of the library furniture and computers out of the building and into storage. (There are 11 large storage bins in the parking lot just for the books!)

Our moving contractor has removed most of the book shelves as well. (In order to put down carpet or paint the walls in the Library, shelves need to be disassembled and moved).

I will take photos on a weekly basis and post them here.
